Old Salem

Old Salem is a historic site that tells the stories of people in the American South, including Moravian, Black, and Indigenous peoples. The mission is to share the rich, authentic, and diverse cultural history of the early South with the community and emphasize learning about enslaved and free people of African descent.

When visiting this attraction, you’ll find the Historic Town of Salem museum, the Frank L. Horton Museum Center, and the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts. Check out exhibits including:

  • The Gardens at Old Salem
  • Blum House Joinery
  • Potter’s Workshop at T. Bagge
  • Moravian Book & Gift
  • Boys’ School
  • Miksch House & Garden
  • Winkler Bakery (baked goods utilizing new and traditional recipes, handcrafted items, and more)
  • Seed Saving Lab
  • Muddy Creek Cafe (family-friendly, rustic café with delicious sandwiches, salads, and soups)
  • Live music
  • Salem Stitches (“Maker Studio” opened to inspire creativity & bring back the social sewing experience)

As a graduate of Salem Academy and a pro of all things Old Salem, I know kids love pumping the water at the square, the Winkler Bakery and their open oven, and tasting their famous sugarcake!

Körner’s Folly

Not far from Winston-Salem in Kernersville, NC, construction on Körner’s Folly began in 1878 by Jule Gilmer Körner. He wanted to use this new home to showcase his design work to his clients. The unique design defied simple description, constantly under renovation to make way for Jule’s new ideas. Here, no two doorways are alike.

In 1970 – after many years of vacancy disrepair, 26 local families, including Körner descendants, saved the Folly from demolition. When visiting this impressive structure, you can take advantage of attractions such as the Public Self-Guided Tours. They offer informational signs in each room that help you navigate the house museum and tell you the history of each room.

The private guided tours are popular among families and include an engaging, entertaining, and educational tour for private groups. Expert employees lead the group through all 22 rooms of the house, sharing information about the history, renovations, and furnishings that make Körner’s Folly so unique and fun. Of course, you can also utilize the bus tours!

Address: 413 South Main St. Kernersville, NC 27284

Hours:Tuesday-Saturday: 10am-4pm
